St. James on-the-Lines Cemetery Decoration Day
September 13, 2026
THIS MORNING WE WILL BEGIN OUTSIDE
Words of Welcome and Introduction: Rev Vickie
Let us pray:
O God, the maker and redeemer of all, we gather this day
surrounded by all Your faithful departed. We ask for your
continued blessing upon them and their families, for Your
love for us and our love for each other is eternal. As a
symbol of our faith in You and as a remembrance of those
we have loved and lost, we give thanks for the wooden
crosses made and donated by Waypoint. May they serve
as a reminder to all those who pass us by that You are
here with us now and in the age to come. All this we ask in
the name of Jesus the Christ in whose name these crosses
are now dedicated.
Amen
We Remember Them
When we are weary and in need of strength
When we are lost and sick at heart,
We remember them.
When we have a joy we want to share
When we have decisions that are challenging to make
We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring
We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn
We remember them.
At the rising of the sun and at its setting
We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now part
of us
As we remember them.
The Blessing
Blessed are those who have died in the Lord. They now
rest from their labours for their good deeds go with them.
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual
light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the
faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
We process to the Church as we sing:
- I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, O weary one, lay down
Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary, and worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting-place,
And he has made me glad. - I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quench’d, my soul revived,
And now I live in him. - I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto me, your morn shall rise,
And all your day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In him my Star, my Sun;
And in that Light of life I’ll walk,
Till trav’ling days are done.
Acknowledgement and Thanksgiving for the Land
We would like to continue by acknowledging that we
are on the traditional territory of the Anishinabek,
which includes the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Pottawatomi
Nations, collectively known as the Three Fires
Confederation. It should be noted that the Wendat and
the Haudenosaunee Nations have also walked on this
territory over time. In times of great change, we
recognize more than ever the importance of honouring
indigenous history and culture.
We are committed to moving forward in the spirit of
reconciliation, respect and good health with all First
Nation, Metis and Inuit people and the community as a
whole. Amen.
Rev Vickie: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the
love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with
you all.
And also with you.
Let us pray,
Gracious God, we pray to you for those we love but see no
longer. Grant them your peace, let light perpetual shine
upon them, and in your loving wisdom and almighty power,
work in them the good purpose of your perfect will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
The Proclamation of the Word
The First Reading from the Book of Isaiah 49: 13-16
Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into
song, you mountains! For the LORD comforts his people
and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord has
forgotten me.”
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no
compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may
forget, I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your
walls are ever before me.
Psalm 23 Hymn #519 “The Lord’s My Shepherd”
(please remain seated as we sing)
The Second Reading from Ephesians 1: 3-14
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every
spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before
the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his
sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to
sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his
pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace,
which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him
we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of
sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he
lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding,
he made known to us the mystery of his will according to
his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put
into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring
unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. In
him we were also chosen, having been predestined
according to the plan of him who works out everything in
conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we,
who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for
the praise of his glory. And you also were included in
Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of
your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in
him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit
guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those
who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Gradual Hymn: #300 “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation”
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John 14:1-6
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God;
believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if
that were not so, would I have told you that I am going
there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me
that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the
place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we
don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the
way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and
the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Reflection: Rev Vickie
The Apostles’ Creed
Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say,
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy
Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
Almighty God, you have knit your chosen people together
in one communion, in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord. Give to your whole Church in heaven and
on earth your light and your peace. Lord, we pray to you
With the fellowship of the saints.
Grant to us who are still in our pilgrimage, and who walk as
yet by faith, that your Holy Spirit, may lead us in holiness
and righteousness all our days. Lord, we pray to you
With the fellowship of the saints.
Grant to your faithful people pardon and peace, that we
may be cleansed from all our sins and serve you with a
quiet mind. Lord, we pray to you
With the fellowship of the saints.
Grant to all who mourn a sure confidence in your loving
care, that, casting all their sorrow on you, they may know
the consolation of your love. Lord, we pray to you
With the fellowship of the saints.
Give us grace to entrust those who have died to your
never-failing love which sustained them in this life. Receive
them into the arms of your mercy and remember them
according to the favour you bear for your people. We
remember especially those who have died in the name of
peace. Lord, we pray to you
With the fellowship of the saints.
Bless, we pray, this cemetery and those who care for it,
and grant that all those whose earthly remains are buried
here may dwell in your heavenly kingdom. Lord, we pray to
you.
Lord, graciously hear us. Amen
Confession and Absolution
Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite
in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his
table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s
forgiveness.
Silence is kept
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what
we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart; we
have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We
are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the
sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us
and forgive us, that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver
you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all
goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
My Peace [sung]: My peace I give unto you;
It’s a peace that the world cannot give.
It’s a peace that the world cannot understand.
Peace to know, peace to live.
My peace I give unto you.
Offertory Hymn: #352 “Amazing Grace”
Prayer over the Gifts
God of mercy, accept the worship we offer you this day.
Increase, we pray, our faith, deepen our hope, and confirm
us in Your eternal love. We ask this in the name of Jesus
Christ the Lord. Amen.
The Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and
earth;
we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our
Lord, whose victorious rising from the dead has given to us
the hope of resurrection and the promise of eternal life.
Therefore, with angels and archangels and all who have
served you in every age, we raise our voices to proclaim
the glory of your name.
People [sung]: Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Hosanna in the highest.
We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness
and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling
Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the
prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus
your Son.
For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the
world. In him, you have delivered us from evil,
and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have
brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into
righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a
death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my
body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance
of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had
given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of
you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever
you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, Father, according to his command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to
you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this
bread, and this wine.
In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and
make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you
dwell with all your Children; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the
author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father,
now and for ever.
Amen.
Gathering our prayers and praises into one, let us say,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
This is the bread which has come down from heaven.
Those who eat this bread will live forever.
The gifts of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God.
We are an open table and all are welcome to receive both the
bread and the wine of Communion.
Closing Hymn: #425 “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”
